Strengthen your school’s safety and prevention practices with CSTAG Basic Training, an evidence-based model developed by Dr. Dewey Cornell and the University of Virginia. This full-day training equips multidisciplinary school teams with the knowledge and skills to prevent violence, promote positive outcomes, and manage student threats effectively and fairly.

Presenter: Mark Muscat, A former teacher, Mark Muscat has worked as a school psychologist and behavior intervention specialist for Michigan public schools for almost 25 years. He specializes in working with students, staff, and parents to address challenging behavior, including threats and acts of violence. Mark has been a leader in bringing the CSTAG model to southeast Michigan and has contributed to numerous threat assessments and safety plans. Mark has a background in special education, crisis responding, and other multi-tiered systems of support, including PBIS, trauma-informed practices, bullying prevention/awareness, and social emotional learning. Mark is a certified trauma specialist, as well as a CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) and ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) trainer. Mark has lectured at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Eastern Michigan University for over 8 years, teaching on topics such as behavior management, inclusion, mental health, and school violence. 

Target Audience: This training is designed for multidisciplinary school teams responsible for maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment. Ideal participants include school administrators, counselors, psychologists, social workers, special education staff, school resource officers, and other educators involved in student support, intervention, and school safety planning.

The CSTAG Basic Training is especially recommended for district or building-level threat assessment teams seeking a consistent, evidence-based framework to guide their prevention and response efforts.

Late registration and walk-ins may not be accommodated if the workshop has met its maximum capacity for registered participants.  Please contact Tonia Finstrom at Tonia.finstrom@swwc.org for registration confirmation and questions. A $15 administrative fee will be added to any registrations accepted after the registration deadline or for walk-in participants.  

Cancellations must be received by 4:00 p.m. on January 8, 2026 to qualify for a full refund, after which all registrations are final and no refunds will be issued.  Substitution of attendees from the same district/organization will be allowed up to the day of the event.
